Sweet Dark 05:52
A cold glow to sunny days Spotlights the world as a cracking stage In the sweet dark of ancient caves Forgotten dreams can still be made Breathe in shooting stars To spark the action that ignites the change Breathe in shooting stars To spark the action that ignites the change Breathe in shooting stars To spark the action that ignites the change

Stand up Unify Educate yourself And heal Your reality is not real Catering to your delusions Is no longer an option We will not pretend We will not be your docile slave We will not be a footstool to oppression We will only pledge allegiance to the truth I hold you accountable You must stand You must fight But not with violence and chaos With self-love Your reality is not real Catering to your delusions Is no longer an option We will not pretend We will not be a footstool to oppression Most of all We will not dress up this genocide And call it police brutality Stand up Unify Educate yourself And heal Learn Grow And live And question everything Stand up Stand up Stand up Stand up With self-love I'm not sad I don't want your pity I want change

The comfort of this cocoon No longer serves you You need to be awake And dreaming in this cave Where you can drink the sky Without needing to see to know Your heartbeat is worth more Than the raindrops of your thoughts I need the darkness To know the form That breath will take This is not a cage I need the darkness To know the form That breath will take This is not a cage Eat the fear To let it go Unleash the beast Til you find some release From its hold Wear its skin To become whole Those we have lost Are now guardians In the unknown We're not alone Not alone

about

Emergence is a sonic exploration between radiance and turbulence, activism and mysticism, electronic and organic matter, natural grit and supernatural wonder. It is about finding a renewed sense of action and mobility by connecting personal hardship to collective purpose.

Some tracks are postcards from the early pandemic and are delivered with an urgency to catalyze change within cracking systems. Other tracks are a journey back to the ashes of grief and lost worlds in order to find closure and rebirth. This album is a memory palace that has caught fire while help is on the way. It is a symbol of stepping into some aspect of ourselves that we were afraid of, and about finding agency, strength, and compassion after surviving trauma.

When I jumped through a doorway that was spitting fire in 2017 to survive arson, I told myself I would never hesitate to do anything again. It took me right up until this year, and this present moment with you, to truly follow through on that promise by releasing this album.

This is not just an album release, it’s a letting go of my own self-doubt, apprehension, and fear. It’s about releasing myself from hiding, and no longer being held captive in the tower of my own head by that piece of myself that has been so hyper-focused on error, and potential for failure.

For so many years I was terrified of fully outing myself as an independent musical artist. I’ve always kept my music largely hidden, and perceived it as a spiritual practice that ‘wasn’t allowed’ to connect with the outside world. Later on, I realized that I was using this as an excuse to shroud my creative efforts behind layers of rickety confidence and nerves.

At some point the game of vicious external comparisons with other artists, and the internal nitpicking needs to end, if only with the humbling realization that what you are creating might mean SOMETHING to SOMEONE out there; it has to be worth it, even if only on a shooting star’s chance that you can help one other person feel less lonely and more connected to their own human condition.

The inner critic & eminent saboteur, no matter how riddled with insomnia they are, must go to sleep at some point in order for the real you to wake up. This album is a challenge to myself to unapologetically wake up and arrive. It’s time to start wearing my heart on my sleeve and my soul on my tongue, to not camouflage or deflect as a defence mechanism, and to not feel the burning need to incessantly justify my ‘outed’ creative existence to myself anymore––it's time to stop burying my passion alive.

This is a release in every sense, about putting my intention and energy out there for the first time with an album that I needed to get out of my system as part of my personal healing before venturing into more sparkly pastures. It's a letting go in order to make space for a flow of new creation and sharing, regardless of how many people engage with or like the content.

This album is a tribute to those personal moments that feel darkest before the dawn. It is my hope that sharing some of these experiences of suffering, growth, and longing through art can invoke a communal feeling of healing and catharsis—to bring darkness to light, to move you in any way, to believe in our human capacity to spark change.

Thank you so much for embarking on this journey with me, it's only just begun. Happy Solstice!

As part of the actionable initiative of this album:

100% of proceeds from Summon (with Paul Ciuk) go to This Way Up’s Kitchen Fundraiser (tinyurl.com/2p88vm9y). This Way Up is an incredible group of queer and trans BIPOC youth working in the Toronto area doing compassion-driven groundwork to provide aid to marginalized communities.

100% of proceeds from Evolve (feat. Letetra Widman) go to the Justice for Jacob Blake fundraiser (tinyurl.com/mrynemtx). Letetra Widman is Jacob Blake’s sister, whose voice is the riveting heart of that track.

100% of proceeds from Record Keeper (feat. Ta’Kaiya Blaney) go to the Git’luuhl’um’hetxwit cabin and camp fund (tinyurl.com/5n9887m). This fundraiser is supported by Ta’Kaiya Blaney, whose voice – that of a fierce 11 year old environmental and indigenous rights activist at the time of singing – is the glowing soul of that track.

Big love and eternal gratitude to all the powerful voices, collaborators, and inspirations featured on the album: Paul (Paz) Ciuk, Letetra Widman, Marla Schreiber, Ta’Kaiya Blaney, and all the samples that colour in the energy of the album, from 52 foot long whales to a legendary viking in a cave to BLM protestors.

To my incredibly supportive family, who allowed me to grow up and become whatever kind of weirdo I needed to be: my gratitude is boundless.

Special mention to my anchor partner Marla Schreiber, for being the ultimate muse, morale manager, bluntly honest soundboard, contributing artist, and voice of endless optimistic possibility alongside me throughout this entire process (which she actually initiated right before our house fire by challenging me to: “make an album that I want to dance to!”). In large part, the energy of this entire album, from its inception to its release, is dedicated to you.

Additional mention goes to my other brilliant loving partner Antonio Carito for his keen ears and eyes, constructive feedback, and giant supportive heart that helped sculpt the final form and delivery of certain sounds and sights. I deeply appreciate how magnanimous you are, your unbridled sense of excitement at giant creative concepts, and how well you balance gentle nurturing energy with a firm sense of challenge.

To all my friends and other kindred energies that have always looked out for me: I could not have done this without you (especially all those who listened to earlier versions of the record and reported back with their impressions).

I feel so held by so many people in my life, even at times when it’s been more challenging to hold myself up.
